Description

Light, crispy beignets made with buttermilk and a sweet glaze, perfect for breakfast or dessert. A New Orleans-inspired treat that’s easy to make and irresistibly addictive.


Ingredients

2¼ tsp active dry yeast
¾ cup warm water
¼ cup granulated sugar
½ cup buttermilk
1 egg
23 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
½ tsp salt
3½ cups all-purpose flour
Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
1 cups powdered sugar
23 tbsp milk (or buttermilk)
1 tsp vanilla extract


Instructions

Combine warm water and sugar in a bowl. Stir in yeast and let sit 5–10 minutes until frothy.
Whisk buttermilk, egg, and melted butter in another bowl.
Add the yeast mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until combined.
In a third bowl, mix flour and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture until a sticky dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled.
Roll dough into ½-inch-thick sheet. Cut into 2-inch squares.
Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C). Fry beignets in batches until golden brown on both sides.
Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla for the glaze. Drizzle over warm beignets.

Notes

Use a frying thermometer to maintain oil temperature and avoid greasy results.
Glaze should be runny enough to coat beignets smoothly but not too wet.
Serve immediately for maximum fluffiness. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours.
Recipe is halal and free of pork, meat, and alcohol.
